We Abolished Slavery Already!

Nothing irritated me more than finding out that Libyan authorities were opening an investigation following claims of slave auctioning made light by an exclusive CNN Report. According to CNN news "A high-level committee has been convened encompassing representatives from all the security apparatus to oversee this investigation," Anes Alazabi, an official with the internationally recognized government of Libya's Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency, told CNN.

I want to first give supreme credit to CNN for exposing and shining light on this horrific operation. Surprisingly, this story has not gotten the coverage that I think it should have. While  the current white house President sits with 140 characters criticizing Hilary Clinton for losing and being a "big loser"regarding this past election, He has said nothing about the issue. It hasn't been all that long since the 13th Amendment crushed slavery in 1864. However, despite the strides that African Americans have made given the institutionalized racism and enslavement starting in Jamestown, Virgina in 1619, there is still more oppression on the least of us.

The larger issue and conversation that needs to continue is Modern Day Slavery, according to an article "There are estimated 40.3 million people in modern slavery around the world, including:

  • 10 million children
  • 24.9 million people in forced labour
  • 15.4 million people in forced marriage
  • 4.8 million people in forced sexual exploitation

Although slavery has been abolished, much like what is that is going on in Libyan, when migrants flee from oppression and are put in precarious situations, what can be done to  remedy these kinds of events from happening? We can all agree that in order to secure safety and freedom for all, it starts with caring. In the past decade I strongly discern that we have become desensitized to these horrific situations. Lets start by opening up a dialogue of how we can help, consider starting when the people being persecuted, could have very well been your own loved ones.
